Formulation, also known as reflecting, mirroring, or paraphrasing is the conversational processes of restating what someone has said but using other words. The traditional view of mediation is that formulation is a neutral means through which mediators and therapists may come to know the issues of concern to clients. This thesis investigated the use of formulation in mediation and therapy as a non-neutral tool for controlling conversations.

The sessions analyzed were a problem-solving mediation session and a solution-focused therapy session. A formulation was operationally defined as any statement containing an explicit discourse marker identifying what follows as being a paraphrase of what was said or where similar intentions could be easily inferred. The effect of formulation was then examined at both micro and macro levels. A micro-level analysis revealed how formulation permits the user to control important elements of the conversation at a turn-by-turn level. A macro-level analysis reveals how the effects of individual formulations accumulated over the course of each session to exert considerable control over how the clients' understanding of their situation is constructed.
