This thesis discusses the dream of the beloved as it occurs in four works by Novalis, E. T. A. Hoffmann, E. A. Poe and Gerard de Nerval. The thoughts and beliefs as well as the personalities and lives of the romantic poets have contributed to the perception of the dreams expressed in their works. In consideration of the different religious positions, the psychological makeup and the philosophy of the writers, a comparison of the dreams will be made at the end of this study. While in the novel Heinrich von Ofterdingen the hero yearns in his dreams for an unattainable ideal, Medardus in Hoffmann's work Die Elixiere des Teufels is possessed by nightmares and anxieties due to a curse and "the devil's elixir". The tale Ligeia unfolds hallucinations and visions "engendered" by "opium" in which the beloved arises from the realm of memory. In Nerval's story Aurelia a mentally disturbed narrator experiences visions and dreams due to his suffering and the loss of an idealized woman who is no longer alive.

Within the macro structure of the above works, the micro structure unites with the narration and all melt into one another in the thematic content, out of which the dream of the beloved emerges.
