The debates over Multidisciplinary Practice (MDP) as it concerns lawyers and neighboring professions represent the latest frontier in the perpetual contest that characterizes and shapes the system of professions. This dissertation argues that the justifications advanced for MDP involving lawyers reflect a misperception of the nature of MDP as a collaborative institution and the source of value in a true MDP. This misperception has resulted in the attribution of benefits to MDP which, upon a proper understanding of its nature, are not derivable therefrom without costs that render such benefits pyrrhic. The case for such MDP is therefore theoretically and pragmatically weak and the concept, contrary to the view in some intellectual circles, is not saved by trade law disciplines nor does it find support in concurrent developments abroad.
