This dissertation is about the connection between protesters and social movement organizations. The main dependent variable is frame alignment: the linkage between the motives of demonstrators and the frames of protest organizers. It is important to study frame alignment because it relates to mobilization processes, it correlates with the political impact of protest, and it is connected to the role of demonstrations in democracy. More than 6,000 protesters were surveyed in Belgium, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom, participating in 29 demonstrations on four different issues: austerity, environment, discrimination, and democracy.

The results show that there is great variation in the extent to which demonstrators are aligned with protest organizers. On average, about half of the reasons people have to protest do not overlap with what social movements put forward.

There are various factors that explain degrees of frame alignment. Alignment is higher when events are initiated by strong, professional organizations and when people are recruited by co-members. There is less alignment amongst participants with high political interest, and when the issue of the protest event receives a lot of political attention. Furthermore, some frames resonate more than others. People are more aligned with frames that talk about familiar matters than with frames that are more distant from daily life. It also matters who or what the organizers blame. Abstract causes are less resonant than specific people or organizations who are held responsible.

Finally, media attention matters. The relationship between organizers' frames and protesters' frames is for an important part mediated by media coverage on the protest issue. Many of the organizers' goals only reach participants when they are covered by journalists.

In sum, protest crowds are not homogeneous. The way protesters interpret issues varies widely within demonstrations. The frames that officially underlie demonstrations are not always shared by the activists marching in the streets. Degrees of frame alignment depend on features of demonstrators, features of organizers, the frames organizers use, media attention for the protest issue, and the wider context of the protest event.
