The purpose of this Capstone project was to review and detail the evolution of fileless malware, how it evades traditional antivirus solutions, and how it has risen to become a popular attack vector for today's hackers. Fileless malware runs in a computer's memory and does not leave forensic artifacts on the hard drive. It can maintain persistence by hiding and altering the registry. This study includes an in depth look at the different types of fileless malware and how they use different tactics to compromise computers and evade detection. The research was designed to show the importance of understanding this type of malware so further research can be conducted to detect and prevent fileless attacks. This Capstone researched the best ways to currently detect and prevent fileless malware attacks and to encourage further research against future attacks. New tools, new techniques, and more research will be needed to stop the rise of fileless malware.
