This study explored the nature and impact of the relationship that develops between young music students and their private instrument teachers. The researcher conducted a review of the literature on psychoanalytic conceptualizations of music and relationships between students and teachers before gathering qualitative data through a series of semi-structured interviews. Eight participants who reported having meaningful relationships with private instrument teachers in childhood were interviewed about their experiences, and data from their interviews were analyzed using an Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis approach. The findings revealed the presence of compelling relational dynamics that have clinical implications for fostering effective therapeutic relationships.
