Today, web service is a distributed technology that can successfully solve in-tegration problems between heterogeneous systems. The supporting technology for web services has been widely studied mainly focusing on the standardization of service transactions and running a single and multiple web services. However, with the growing demand of cloud computing, most companies are moving software to the cloud in form of web services, which forces researchers to find more efficient techniques and approaches that can deal with large-scale web services. In dealing with complex and large-scale web service requests, there are many issues that need to be addressed such as the complexity of designing large-scale tasks, the lack of semantic discovery process and the inefficiency of QoS based composition and optimization algorithms. In this dissertation, a novel approach to model, discover, compose and optimize large-scale web services in cloud environment is being proposed. The proposed approach consists of four main components. First, a Model-Driven approach that uses UML to design the web service composition workflow. Second, a cluster-based approach will be used to cluster web services, which will significantly improve the web service discovery process. Finally, an evolutionary optimization algorithm and a tree-based heuristic search algorithm will be proposed to optimize web service composition and find the optimal solution according to multi-objective QoS attributes.
