The emergence of virtual currencies over the last decade including the most well- known currency Bitcoin, includes currencies such as Erherum (ETH), LiteCoin (LTC), Zcash (ZEC), Dash, Ripple (XRP), and Monero (XMR). (Bajpai, 2017). Financial experts, investors, cyber professionals, and the scientific community have various opinions, both positive and negative, regarding Bitcoin's future. Government officials are mixed on the acceptance and the regulation needed to address illicit use and provide for economic stability. Through research the technology, uses, adoption and how user investment value is derived from Bitcoin and its underlying architecture, blockchain will be exposed. The research will lead to conclusions that Bitcoin as well as other cryptocurrencies will proliferate. Not so much as a substitute but as an as an adjunct to more traditional government backed currencies. This proliferation will take place not only due to the intrinsic value that users will place in cryptocurrencies but due to the proliferation of the underlying trust system associated with Bitcoin, blockchain. Finally, the paper will expose threats and risks posed by acceptance of Bitcoin and suggest regulation needed to counter those threats and risks to economic systems as well as end user investment.
