The athletic budgets for 15 institutions were analyzed to determine if participating in the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament affects the men's basketball team operating expenses (budget). The specific institutions were selected because of their participation in the 2012 Division I Men's NCAA basketball tournament after failing to qualify the previous year (2011) as well as falling short the subsequent (2013) year. However, after analyzing the budgets there were no statistically significant differences reported with the basketball men's team operating expenses. Upon further analysis there were significant differences reported with the athletic budget grand total expenses of the 15 institutions. Therefore, it was concluded that participating in the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament does not affect the men's basketball team operating expenses, but does affect the athletic budget grand total expenses.
