Because of the importance of gate receipts in Major League Baseball (MLB) compared to other major sports leagues, examining the relationship between attendance determinants and recent MLB attendance is a needed, relevant, and pragmatic research endeavor. In addition to the influence of ticket sales and attendance, it is necessary to investigate the effect of facility location on attendance because it has been found (e.g., Snyder & Daskin, 2005) that facility location is a significant factor with regard to the economics associated with facility operations and facility maintenance.

To investigate the variance of MLB attendance via the relationships that exist between variables and single games (Level I) and teams (Level II), the first study (Chapter II) employed a multilevel model approach to examine the relationship between the attendance determinants and the actual MLB regular season attendance. Additionally, the 26 independent variables were used with reference to the attendance data of the 2014 MLB regular season single games. Among these 26 predictors, the nine Level I variables (e.g., the game's uncertainty [p < .001], the visiting team's final rank [p < .05]), and the three Level II variables (i.e., the home team's playoff appearances, the average ticket price, and the stadium capacity [p < .001]) significantly influenced attendance.

In addition, the second study (Chapter III) used a location theory model to examine the influence of the MLB stadium location on attendance for the 2006-2015 MLB regular seasons. vi Based on the results of the location model, this study analyzed the relationship between the actual MLB regular season attendance and other studies' (e.g., DeSchriver & Jensen, 2002; Welki & Zlatoper, 1994) elements including the location variable by using multilevel modeling. In addition, the attendance data of the 2006-2015 MLB regular season single games (M2=24297) were used as dependent variables. Among the 28 independent variables, the 12 Level I variables (e.g., quality of the home and visiting teams [p < .001]) and the nine Level II variables (e.g., the location variable [p < .001]) were statically significant and had a significant influence on the attendance of the MLB regular seasons.
