This qualitative research study of small, short-term, goal oriented, music groups in the performing arts examines the relationship, experiences, and common goals of music groups. I specifically looked at small music groups within the context of an academic setting that form and rehearse for a specific, short-period of time and have a single objective of performing at the end of their 10-week rehearsal period. It is within the context of this study that I examined the relationships between members, their individual experiences, and how they achieve a final performance as a common goal. Using a qualitative research method, I collected interview data from 14 participants at a music school located in San Francisco, CA. As a participant observer in these workshops, I also collected field notes to support my observations and interview data. This data were then analyzed using qualitative coding methods and NVivo software to explain the experiences reported by members of these music groups. Three categories of themes emerged, showing that the motivation for members was primarily personal improvement, that members interacted with minimal conflict, made decisions with a democratic process, and managed the challenges of personalities, song selection, and varying skill levels and commitment. From the data, I developed a new model for short-term goal oriented small groups. The Blue Bear team effectiveness model assembles pertinent characteristics from several existing group and team models into one coherent collection, which describes these short-term musical teams and the processes that contribute to their final goal. Based on the interviews my observations, the Blue Bear workshops are a unique, exciting, and rewarding experience. Members routinely felt the workshops helped them reach their goals, exceed their expectations, and become better musicians.
