The distribution of food resources is an important factor affecting the movement and distribution patterns of common bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus and has been shown to be directly related to spatial location and density of dolphins. The purpose of the present study was to determine the prey species that are available in the waterways near Savannah, Georgia, and to relate the species abundance and assemblage during the summer months to the presence of common bottlenose dolphins. Concurrent dolphin point surveys, net trawls, and active acoustics surveys were conducted within the Wilmington River at the confluences of the Skidaway River and at St. Augustine Creek near Savannah, GA. Three active acoustic recordings with distinct catch compositions were analyzed to determine if the biology in the trawl area could be identified using a single beam echosounder only. In two areas where dolphin abundance was significantly different, prey availability, prey size, and prey weight were also significantly different. At Skidaway River, there were significantly more dolphin sightings (p<0.001), significantly more prey were available (p<0.001), and prey weight was significantly higher (p<0.001) than at St. Augustine Creek. Additionally, trawl and total NASC were greater at Skidaway River, and there were more schools than individuals within the trawl area. Prey lengths at Skidaway River were similar to lengths from stomach contents analyses in both South Carolina and North Carolina, but prey lengths at St. Augustine were much shorter than in other studies. In a dynamic environment such as a turbid estuary, understanding the foraging ecology of a predator that spends most of its time unavailable to observation requires a multi-faceted approach.
