Thesis (M.A.)--Pacifica Graduate Institute, 2017.
Includes bibliographical references
This thesis explores the human experience of cultural change, immigration, and exposure to different cultural complexes while attempting to find one's unique authentic Self through the process of individuation as described in Jungian psychology. A combined hermeneutic and heuristic approach to the research merges a global perspective with the personal experiences of the author to provide a better understanding of the cultural differences influencing individuation. The author demonstrates how, consciously or unconsciously, her journey of immigration, repeatedly adjusting to new environments, and confronting discrimination became a roadmap to understanding cultural differences and how they affect individuation. Cross-cultural research has not included individuation, leaving a gray area that serves as a shadow between the human suffering of immigrants and identity of the Self. Navigating through the diverse cultural influences that come to bear on clients who have immigrated would aid a clinician in guiding them on the path of individuation.
