In this research project I focused on four individuals' journeys into and through severe psychic suffering. I began with the aim of developing insight into how such difficulties might be understood as an adaptation and solution to a particular set of life circumstances. I set out to cultivate an appreciation for these circumstances by interviewing people with extreme psychological difficulties, attending particularly to childhood and adolescent life experiences, psychosocial stressors, and encounters with the mental health system. Through these interviews, I sought to understand how psychosis might be a consequence of traumatic life events; to gain deeper insight into the intra-psychic dynamics of the experience of psychosis; and to examine ways that the mental health system might facilitate and/or impede the growth of each person on their life trajectory. I used an interpretative phenomenological analysis approach to identify and explore significant themes in participants' narratives. Common themes that emerged include trauma, early attachment issues, dissociation, flight into fantasy, and voice hearing. These are presented within the context of four clinical case studies.
