This dissertation provides a depth psychological understanding of women choosing to remain in unfulfilling relationships. This research examines the lived experience of women who encountered romantic love, experienced unhappiness in relationships and continued to stay in the relationships. Based on an interpretative phenomenological approach (IPA) to the research, the findings suggest that a heterosexual woman's upbringing impacts the way that she perceives romantic love and relates to men. Data collected in interviews with six female participants is categorized into superordinate themes: idealization, Eros and arrows, psychological consequences of prolonging a relationship, and individuation. The findings reveal the painful experiences that these women encountered in their past relationships and how they are able to heal from the experience after separation. The conclusions drawn from this study offer guidance to clinicians who are working with couples or individuals who are experiencing problems within their relationships.
