Throughout history, schizophrenia has had many theories to its etiology beginning with supernatural causes such as punishment from god or the result of demonic possession to a more medical model where schizophrenia was the result of irregularities in neurotransmitters or a recessive genetic gene. As the speculation to the cause of schizophrenia has changed, so have the treatment interventions, which have vacillated from science-based to intuitive treatment. Currently, the most widely accepted explanation of schizophrenia involves an interaction of genetic, social, and psychological factors combined with stress that results in the illness. Modern treatment focuses on medication management and psychosocial rehabilitation with a view that schizophrenia is a chronic, lifelong disorder that can never be fully cured. However, there is an alternative viewpoint, which fosters the hope of full-remission stemming from a psychodynamic approach. While not ignoring the abundant neurological, biological, and genetic research, the psychodynamic perspective considers these findings as effects rather than causes of the disorder. The psychodynamic perspective is a minority viewpoint, which has often faced proponents who view this treatment as unethical or dangerous. Nonetheless, sufficient evidence has accumulated over the years to counter such negative responses, and support the legitimacy of a psychodynamic approach. This dissertation seeks to develop a model program for those with schizophrenia using psychodynamic theory.
