Results of this research indicated that the number of teenage Internet and social media users who are falling victim to online abuse has increased, but the true number is not actually known. Studies showed that teenage Internet and social media users could fall victim to sexual extortion, sexual exploitation, human trafficking, and cyberbullying. Victims can experience effects such as depression, anxiety, and embarrassment. In some extreme cases, the abuse can result in the death of the victim, sometimes in form of suicide. Evidence revealed that many organizations such as law enforcement at all levels, along with private companies such as Facebook, Instagram, Thorn, and schools are working to combat sexual and nonsexual abuse facilitated through the Internet and social media.

Recommendations are provided on how to stop online predators from committing acts of abuse. This project suggests that Internet users and their parents follow specific guidelines for internet use and safety, to decrease the chances of falling victim to online sexual abuse. This project also recommended that schools provide education to their staff, parents, and students on safe internet use to aid in decreasing the number of victims of cyberbullies.
