A conceptual model for small and mid-sized business growth is developed and tested in this manuscript, tying together literatures that advance the depth and breadth of individual and organizational social structures in and toward new revenue generation. Organizational capabilities, in turn, solidify, modify and support the economic continuance of these social connections. In this model, relational capital and organizational capabilities create a capacity toward revenue generation (labeled `Generative Capacity'), which serves as the multi-stage propulsion mechanism for growth trajectory within and across each developmental stage for the small- and midsized enterprise (SME). For those entrepreneurs interested in growth, I found that this combination of resources can be purposefully developed within each stage (similar to asset stock accumulation and asset deployment), serving as a source of competitive advantage and sustainability for the SME. This model was developed, tested, and refined through analyses of interview and survey data obtained from Midwest manufacturing entities representing various stages of growth up to $500,000,000 in total revenue. The data support Generative Capacity configuration as an excelling mechanism within each developmental stage, and Generative Capacity reconfiguration as a propelling mechanism between each developmental stage.
