Sustainable development, defined by the 1987 Brundtland Report to the United Nations titled "Our Common Future," highlighted intergenerational responsibility for planetary stewardship and spawned the convergence of hitherto diverse social, economic, and environmental objectives under the umbrella of business concerns. The sustainable development argument holds that the planet is approaching its limitations and the present course is unsustainable unless three types of capital are managed: economic, social, and natural. The so-called triple bottom line is widely held up as being part of business strategy. No clear roadmap has been developed however, as to how these social, economic, and environmental objectives can be developed and reached. The field of organization development is destined to play a vital role in empowering growing numbers of organizations seeking to achieve successful ecological, economic, and social outcomes within an increasingly complex and uncertain global environment. This study examines sustainable entrepreneurship as part of a rising business response to sustainable development. Through the use of a meta-synthesis approach the research reveals that sustainable entrepreneurship has to be viewed against a broader framework of corporate sustainability in order to fully appreciate its role as part of a co-evolutionary process through which business has the potential to support sustainable development. This thesis provides insight into how organizations can advance in promoting "sustainable effectiveness."
