Modern video games often allow users autonomy of action in the game world, with blockbuster titles that give players an opportunity to make decisions about who their characters are and how they respond to stimuli. To better understand this autonomy, a body of literature has emerged that examines how players interact with moral problems in virtual environments. This review surveys recent scholarship related to player behavior in these games and examines how gamers collaborate in building narratives and the influences present as they do. To present this information, I address topics that influence gamers and their narratives in three areas: (1) psychological factors, (2) artistic factors, and (3) technological factors. An understanding of this information can aid researchers in further studying behavior in virtual environments, and can aid game designers as they seek to improve their systems and create more immersive experiences for their audiences.
