The problem of this research is to use the Morphogenetic Approach to evaluate and compare the stories of congregation members in two African American congregations in south Los Angeles in order to discern their perception of the presence or absence of group agency, its constraints and enablements, and its impact on socio-cultural transformation. The Morphogenetic Approach is a theory of socio-cultural change that was developed by the social scientist Margret Archer. The theory is grounded in the field of critical realism. This project has important practical and theoretical implications for those doing anthropological, sociological, and community work in the urban context, particularly in south Los Angeles. Key questions that are addressed are: How do congregants express their own views of the mechanisms of change? How are these mechanisms re-described within the Morphogenetic Approach?

520 $a In regards to my findings, I discovered that physical conditions such as unsafe settings, fragmented families, unemployment, drugs, and disconnected social networks were key material and human constraints at both sites. In addition, I found that ideologies which stigmatized black men as "isolated" and "weak," which labeled neighborhoods as unsafe, and which placed race as a central boundary marker were significant constraints. The findings also uncovered that the mother-child bond, a sense of "comradery" among the men, alternative settings, the pastor, organizational partnerships, a sense of connectedness to God, and positive examples were all key mechanisms of change. In regards to the cultural system, key mechanisms of change included economic literacy, an appreciation for a multi-ethnic identity, an emphasis on forgiveness, belonging in a new family, and new formal role schemas.
520 $a In regards to agency, there were also key findings in regards to partnering agencies that provided needed resources but reproduced a harmful ideology of dependency. The social positioning of the congregations is identified as well their emancipatory interests over the selected time period.
520 $a In addition, this research holds important theoretical implications for urban anthropology in respect to understanding culture, materially-based structures, and agency. This research also provides a unique application and critique of the Morphogenetic Approach.
