Sexual assault committed by male student-athletes represents the majority of sexual assault cases on university campuses, with no indication of change in sight. The problem addressed in this qualitative multiple case study is the experiences and perceptions of athletic administrators who have investigated sexual assault against women involving male student-athletes and how the investigations are handled. Moreover, this study examines the responsibility of leadership and the organizational patterns that emerge related to the reporting of sexual assault. Utilizing the theory of new institutionalism, this research examines how external and internal cultures intersect with male student-athletes who commit sexual assault against women. A total of 258 survey invitations were sent to athletic administrators located on the east coast, containing 12 sub-questions designed to answer the three research questions. The research concluded that sexual assault involving male student-athletes is a topic of discussion that most will evade. With the possible influence of leadership and external factors, more extensive research efforts need to focus on how to encourage athletic administrators and university leadership to disclose more data in order to formulate more research. The identification of these efforts can be helpful in guiding athletic administrators and universities to produce more educational opportunities and policies intended to prevent male student-athletes from committing sexual assault against women.
