This dissertation is a qualitative investigation of the phenomenon of flow states and peak experiences encountered by four participants from a 16-day river trip through the Grand Canyon. In contemporary society, a troubling dichotomy exists between an unprecedented access to information, with a simultaneous loss of knowledge and appreciation of the restorative benefits of nature. The purpose of this research was to explore the capacity of remote environments to facilitate flow states, peak experiences, and transpersonal meaning.

The study utilized the heuristic research method to systematically explore the phenomenology and assigned meaning of a singular human experience. Data was collected through retrospective phone interviews and e-mail correspondences. The six-stage research process identified parallel themes in the participants reported encounters with flow states, peak experiences, and assigned transpersonal meaning, which included positive influences on physical and emotional well-being, and a deeper appreciation for the natural world. The results of this research supported the existing relevant literature and highlighted the potential of immersive nature encounters to promote personal growth, happiness, self-understanding, social connectedness, and respect for nature and the greater circle of life. The study's findings may be useful in developing nature-based continuing education curriculum for healthcare providers, designing therapeutic interventions for clinical and sub-clinical adult and adolescent populations, and promoting awareness and dissemination of information about the restorative value of the natural world to human health and well-being.
