Cloward and Ohlin's differential opportunity theory is selected as the basis to study juvenile delinquency, gang delinquency, and the differentiation of delinquent gangs in Taiwan. The findings suggest that lower class youth in Taiwan do not appear to show a higher degree of aspiration for achieving the conventional success-goals. Cloward and Ohlin may have overlooked the contribution of subterranean values and aspirations to lower class delinquency. It is proposed that delinquency in Taiwan is mostly found among lower class youth who internalize subterranean success-goals and who are denied access to legitimate opportunities. Overall, the data indicate that the key factor for the development of delinquent gangs in Taiwan is the self-defense mechanisms. Collective support and communication opportunity among alienated youth are necessary conditions for setting the stage. Once a group of alienated youth assist each other to develop strong self-defense mechanisms against feelings of guilt and fear, a delinquent gang will emerge and develop irrespective of how each member explains his own failures. Cloward and Ohlin's typology of delinquent gangs is only partly validated. No full-fledged retreatist gangs are found in Taiwan. The interview and related data strongly support Cloward and Ohlin's hypotheses concerning the relationship between the opportunity structure of neighborhoods and the differentiation of gangs. In Taiwan, the gangs of Liu-mangs (criminal gangs) were found in the neighborhoods which exhibited a strong integration of different age-level of offenders as well as a close connection between criminal and conventional societies. The gangs of Tai-paus (conflict gangs) were located in the neighborhoods where there was only weak age-level integration and no integration between criminal and conventional values.
