The purpose of this study was to explore and describe the self-concept of Chinese American women. The participants were five first generation Chinese American women, born and raised in China, immigrants to the U.S. between 1940 and 1960, and English speakers. All participants were volunteers solicited through people known to the researcher.

The phenomenological research method included an exploratory and descriptive stance from the participants frame of reference. The procedures consisted of two open-ended, in-depth interviews with each participant. The initial interview approached the participant's self concept with a pre-determined question asking her to describe as fully as possible, in whatever manner she wished, her sense of who she was. A secondary question asked if she had any role model(s). The second interview sought clarification of unclear responses, and asked two secondary questions: to relate a story that portrayed her "self," and to describe the Chinese word(s) for "self.".

Phenomenological data analysis began with summaries of individual participant protocols designed to highlight natural meaning and structural units reflecting the self-concept, and progressed to an articulation of explicit and implicit references to the self-concept of all the participants. Results revealed four essential structures of the self-concept: contextual, social-interactive, cultural, and autonomous. These reflect an articulation of the explicit and implicit insights on the participants' self-concepts.

Departing from the phenomenological method, hypotheses were derived from the data for future research on the self-concept and on clinical work with Chinese American women. Hypotheses included: (1) that first generation Chinese American women have multi-dimensional self-concepts; (2) that contextual and social-interactive essential structures correlate with Chinese values of self; (3) that an autonomous essential structure reflects western or American values of self; (4) that first generation Chinese American women's self-concepts reflect an emphasis on Chinese cultural values over western or American values of self; (5) that appropriate clinical work with Chinese American women depends on the particular essential structure(s) pre-eminent in their self-concepts.
