Chinese settlement in Inner Mongolia and the resulting conversion of the pasture land into farming land has interested those concerned with the development of the Chinese border region. This dissertation uses the land development in Jerim League as a case study to examine the process of Chinese migration to Inner Mongolia in the nineteenth century. This study focuses on the historical background of the League, including Manchu policies and politics. It also covers the Chinese population crisis which contributed to the expansion movement, a discussion of the Mongolian reaction, and a review of Russian and Japanese involvement.
