This thesis studies Hsu Ling's (507-583) poetry, as a representative of the Palace-style Poetry that was in vogue during the Liang and Ch'en dynasties. The need for an investigation of Hsu Ling's role in the development of Palace-style Poetry and an analysis of his poems with a view of obtaining characteristic poetic features therein, is important, so as to shed some light on this particular sub-genre and to examine its contribution to Classical Chinese poetry.

The thesis is divided into five chapters, of which the first chapter examines Hsu Ling's life and career, the literary circles with which he was associated, and the cultural world he lived in. His career is chronologically divided into three phases, namely, service under the Liang princes, captivity in the North, and service in the Ch'en court.

Chapter two deals with the nature of Palace-style Poetry. It examines the origin and scope of Palace-style Poetry and the factors contributing to its full development in the Liang and Ch'en dynasties. Chapter three investigates Hsu Ling's views on poetry by studying his Preface to the Yu-t'ai hsin-yung, the anthology itself, and Emperor Chien-wen's views on poetry. An in-depth critique of half of Hsu Ling's extant poems is carried out in chapter four. Hsu Ling's works are classified into the following three groups to give a better understanding of the range of his poetry. They are: (1) Descriptive poems embodying sorrows of separation or joys of union; (2) Poems with direct reference to court activities and (3) Personal poems exploring the theme of friendship and the poet's private world. Chapter five evaluates Hsu Ling's contributions to Chinese poetry. His excellence in the shu genre and his skill in writing Parallel Prose which contributed to his success in parallel couplets in his poetry are noted. The historical and literary limitations he faced and the Hsu-Yu style are discussed before an appraisal of his contributions to Chinese poetry is attempted. An Appendix is also included which consists of a full translation of Hsu Ling's poetry.
