Yuan Chen (779-831) provides a rare case in the study of both poetry and politics in the mid- to late-T'ang dynasty. One of the most famous and popular poets of the Yuan-ho (806-20) and Ch'ang-ch'ing (821-4) periods, Yuan was also an important political figure who ascended to chief ministership in 822. Indeed, no other great poet achieved so high a political position and no other high official was so great a poet.

520 $a Poetically, Yuan occupied the most significant position in the mid- to late-T'ang dynasty. Political abuses and the poems of Ch'en Tzu-ang and Tu Fu led him to the development of satirical yueh-fu poems. As the leader of the new yueh-fu movement, he called for poets to bring social and political problems to the attention of the emperor and his ministers. As a poetic genius, Yuan was also the innovator of the Yuan-ho style of poetry, which delighted most poets and laymen and made Yuan and his best friend, Po Chu-i, the most popular poets of their time.
520 $a Politically, Yuan Chen exemplified many aspects of mid- to late-T'ang politics. His career as a vigorous remonstrator and upright censor, his controversial relationship with the eunuchs, his close ties to Emperor Mu-tsung and his conflict with fellow officials reveal the complexity of late-T'ang relationships among the eunuchs, emperor and officials. Yuan's strife-filled political career demonstrates that the competition and hostility abounding at court were produced by continued power struggles as well as by conflict over such substantive issues as war vs. peace. However, the deepest factional divisions were caused by institutional flaws, including the relative ease of ascent to chief ministership and the multiple chief minister system.
520 $a Poetry added to and impeded Yuan's political career. Poetry first won him the attention of Emperor Mu-tsung, and it was his political ability that earned him his chief ministership. However, his reputation as a popular poet cost him the respect of many fellow officials and was in part responsible for his many political setbacks.
