Three novels representing different cultures, Dream of the Red Chamber by Ts'ao Hsueh-chin, Le Rouge et le Noir by Stendhal, and Jude the Obscure by Thomas Hardy, develop the theme of renunciation by means of common esthetic techniques. Each novel portrays a protagonist's mental journey through life, his confrontation with the world, and his final rejection of society at large. Each novel embodies an antithesis between two sets of values: Daoism and Confucianism in Dream of the Red Chamber, Enlightenment and materialism in Le Rouge et le Noir, and Shelleyan modernism and Victorian convention in Jude the Obscure. These ideological relationships force each protagonist to develop a solution to his own problem: Facing an irreconcilable dilemma, each protagonist eventually rejects the world in order to put an end to his emotional suffering.

Two women are significantly involved in the life of each of these protagonists. These feminine pairs represent antithetical sets of values in their diverse social contexts and hence embody the internal conflict the protagonist confronts. Each protagonist is impelled by the external world to give up the woman he truly loves, the one who through sympathy and understanding reflects his true self, and instead to marry the woman he does not love, the one who embodies the values required by the world.

Symbols and double figures in these works illustrate the identity problem of each protagonist. Conflicting values are represented in Ts'ao Hsueh-chin by stone and jade, in Stendhal by red and black, and in Hardy by birds and pigs. These dichotomous images portray the duality of life the protagonist faces. Likewise, minor characters, representing manifest or latent double figures of the protagonist, dramatically foreshadow the latter's destiny.

Time and spatial forms are symbolically arranged to accompany the protagonist's dramatic tensions. The antithesis between self and society is reflected in the opposition of the Grand View Garden and the estate of the Jia clan in Dream of the Red Chamber, that of the garden at Vergy and the houses of the de Renals and of the de la Moles in Le Rouge et le Noir, and that of Marygreen and Christminster in Jude the Obscure. Even the arrangement of individual chapters conveys a sense of stages in the protagonist's journey through life.
