The origin of metallic inlay can be traced by inscriptional evidence to the north-eastern region of the Ch'u cultural horizon. Although inlaid weapons provide the earliest inlay datable by inscription (ca. 550-450 B.C.), excavations in Honan, Shansi and Hopei reveal that inlaid vessels were first produced around 525 B.C. in the northern workshops of the central states and that the concept and techniques of inlaying bronze were native to China.

Direct examination of extant objects reveals at least nine categories of inlay fabrication technique dating from Shang through Ch'ing. These include stone inlay, carbonaceous infill, strand inlay, amalgam inlay, stencil inlay, amalgam gilding, lacquer inlay, and foil inlay. It is possible to assign each of the six basic metal inlay processes to a general time span and occasionally to a style and/or geographic region.

Considering inlay to be a technique rather than a style, and the terms geometric and curvilinear to be "modes" of decoration, it is possible to more precisely describe the various styles of inlay and analyze their chronological development. After a short-lived flourish of pictorial inlay around 500 B.C. there followed within the "geometric mode", the "early linear" and "Chang-chih" styles. These were followed by the "lozenge style" in two phases and the "curvilinear mode" composed of three phases. Each of these stylistic categories can be seen to have a specific motif vocabulary and can sometimes be assigned to geographic regions and time spans. The tendency by the late Warring States period was towards stylistic unification which transcended media and region.

A large number of archaistic vessels are inlaid and nearly every ancient style of inlay was revised during the Sung or Ch'ing dynasties. Archaisms can be determined by inlay technique, and generally Sung vessels are closer to ancient works in style and fabrication than are their Ch'ing counterparts.
