Based upon a field study of a Chinese community in central Taiwan, this research formulates a paradigm of the Chinese kinship system from the analysis of the key concepts of fang and chia-tsu, and discusses how the genealogical fang/chia-tsu system operates in the formation of domestic groups and lineage groups.

The underlying concept behind the genealogical fang/chia-tsu system is father-son filiation: A son constitutes a fang in relation to his father's chia-tsu. From this simple concept, a set of related kinship constructs and principles are recognized by Chinese: (1) continuity of agnatic descent lines, (2) fraternal differentiation based on birth order, (3) generational differentiation between father and son, (4) subordination of fang to chia-tsu, (5) memberships based on successive fang-chia-tsu chains, and (6) fang segmentation based on fraternal and generational differentiation.

I show in this dissertation how such a genealogical paradigm operates to regulate a man's or woman's kinship status, property ownership, domestic organization, agnatic adoption, uxorilocal marriage, lineage formation and segmentation in rural Taiwan when acting in combination with functional features, and review the implications my findings have for previous studies on these subjects.
