A transient stability program has been developed for the Taiwan Power Company, which has high proportion of nuclear generation in power system. This program offers a new territory to investigate nuclear plant effects on the power system transient stability. This program also provides a high speed tool for the Taipower system operational planning.

A generalized procedure of synchronous machine modeling for a large-scale stability study has been presented. The merits and weaknesses of machine modeling can be comprehended through each item of this procedure. Three types of nonlinear synchronous machine modeling implemented into this stability program are derived by following this procedure.

The consistent per-unit values at the interfaces of models have been clarified by a definite derivation of base conversions, which has been attributed to one of the program's unique features of printing out the synchronous machine variables in terms of physical units.

A robust subroutine has been derived to perform the fourth order Runge-Kutta integration method, making the software programming neat and systematical. The coordination between the integration method and algebraic method in the stability calculation is emphasized. The average computing time is four CPU seconds per generator per studying second on IBM 4341.

For simulating the nuclear plant influence on the system, this program has implemented additional four functions: load-limit operation simulated by a low-value gate in the governor model, bypass valve capacity monitored by sending out a warning message, rotor overspeed protection relay, and generator anti-motoring relay. Further study and investigation are planned by the Taiwan Power Company. This program provides room for future additions.
