Recent advances in Chinese archaeology have both augmented and revised an understanding of the ancient, pre-Qin period of Chinese civilization based primarily on traditional historical sources. In the realm of material culture studies this contribution is no more evident than with respect to the category of artifacts known as jade.

This thesis sets forth accounts of ancient jade and its utilization as perceived through the literary records, and through the present fund of relevant archaeological evidence. In so doing I seek to compare the two perspectives on this important marker of ancient Chinese civilization, and identify key conceptual and methodological factors conditioning both.

The discussion has been structured around a detailed examination of evidence from the Late Shang Dynasty site of Yinxu, whose overall archaeological record offers a sound basis for studying ancient jades within their past social contexts. Although subject to serious limitations, such as the lack of large numbers of finds outside of tombs, in other areas of concern, such as mineralogical identity and raw material sources, the archaeological record of ancient jade presents much new evidence to cast light on long-standing issues.
