Online dating is a computer mediated communication (CMC) that has become commonplace and increasingly accepted by the public at large (Smith & Duggan, 2013). Walther (1992) noted that the elements of asynchronicity of messages allow for a greater possiblity of selective self-presentation, and thus the ability to deceive in order to further engage the other actor in an online dating interaction. Face-to-face (FtF) job interview faking behaviors have been investigated, and research shows that those who engage in deceptive behaviors are more likely to obtain the position sought (Levashina and Campion, 2007). In both cases, there exists the possibility for increased levels of deceitful behaviors, as the desired benefits can be more easily obtained by doing so. Impression Management (Barrick, Shaffer & DeGrassi, 2009; Goffman, 1959; Leary & Kowalski, 1990), Self-monitoring (Snyder, 1974) and Interpersonal Deception Theory (Buller & Burgoon, 1996), are all constructs that can be utilized in order to affect the outcome of a particular communication, whether it be FtF or CMC. This study revealed that there is a positive relationship between deception in CMC online dating and FtF employment interviews.
