Parenting can be a challenging, rewarding, and important role. Because the responsibility of ensuring the safety and healthy development of one's child is so important, parenting can also be anxiety inducing. Generalized Anxiety Disorder is a chronic and debilitating condition marked by excessive worry. Normal anxiety associated with parenting may become compounded for parents who suffer from Generalized Anxiety Disorder. For a parent who suffers from Generalized Anxiety Disorder, this compounding of worry could interfere with the quality of the parent-child relationship, hinder the child's psychosocial development, and reduce the parent's quality of life. The problematic synergy between normal parenting anxiety and anxiety associated with generalized anxiety disorder creates a need for psychological treatment options that address the unique needs parents who suffer from Generalized Anxiety Disorder experience. The dissertation was completed in order to create a model, mindfulness-based group treatment option for parents diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder. A mindfulness-based group treatment model program could help parents to better manage the anxiety they experience as parents as well as the anxiety they encounter as sufferers of generalized anxiety disorder. By submitting the model program to expert reviewers for evaluation and, subsequently, utilizing reviewer feedback to identify the strengths and limitations of the model program, future clinicians can better understand how to create mindfulness-based group programs to treat this unique population.
