The purpose of this critical literature review was to examine the relationship between non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and attachment security across the lifespan as well as potential mediating factors that may account for this relationship. Articles were obtained from multiple databases that were written in English and included both NSSI and attachment. Articles evaluating suicidal ideation were not included in the critique. Articles were critically analyzed by evaluating the study design, results, clinical implications of the study, and the overall strengths and weaknesses (i.e., limitations). An overview of the theories on the function of self-injury was included. In several studies, there was greater incidence of NSSI behavior among individuals with insecure attachment styles compared with individuals with secure attachment. Only one mediating variable was found (i.e., emotional dysregulation) which influenced the relationship between self-harming behaviors and attachment insecurity. Limitations included the self-report nature of self-injurious behaviors and the difficult task of measuring attachment security and elements related in adolescents and adults. Additionally, there are an insufficient number of studies on self-harming actions and attachment in young children younger than 12 years of age. Clinical implications are presented as well as treatment options for mental health professionals. Future research should focus on identifying self-injury in children and subsequently more accurate estimates of prevalence rates.
