This secondary data analysis examined the relationship among childhood sexual abuse, caregiver attachment, and adult psychopathology. Specifically, the current study tested a moderation model whereby level of caregiver attachment moderates a hypothesized relationship between childhood sexual abuse and its influence on adult psychopathology. A hierarchical multiple regression was conducted to determine if qualities of the maternal attachment relationship influenced the number of psychological diagnoses associated with the extent of sexual abuse experienced by individuals prior to 16 years of age. The data were drawn from a longitudinal, prospective study, The National Comorbidity Survey (NCS; Kessler, 1990-1992; N = 5,877) and The National Comorbidity: Re-interview (NCS-2; Kessler, 2001-2002; N = 5,001). Of the 5,001 re-interviewed participants, a total sample of 432 female victims of self-reported childhood sexual abuse were included in this study. It was hypothesized that participants who reported more exposure to sexual abuse during childhood would report a greater number of psychological diagnoses in adulthood, and that quality of caregiver attachment would moderate that effect. Age, marital status, and extent of sexual abuse (operationalized as number of days of exposure to rape and sexual molestation) used to predict psychological diagnoses was statistically significant, R2 = .031, F(4, 369) = 2.963, p =.021; adjusted R2 = .021. The addition of maternal attachment variables in Model 2 did not lead to a statistically significant increase in R2 of .019, F(7, 366) = 2.433, p = .065. The further addition of the three interactions between the extent of sexual abuse and maternal attachment scores to the model predicting psychological diagnoses (Model 3) did not lead to a statistically significant increase in R2, F(3, 363) = 2.020, p = .111. Implications for future research and clinical practice are discussed.
