Pediatric sleep problems rank highest among childhood problems reported to pediatricians (Gradisar et al., 2011). Treatment approaches range from medication to cognitive-behavioral therapy, though few are applicable to children and adolescents. Interest has spread to applications of mindfulness-based approaches, yet the research is still in its infancy and lacking. Although sleep disorders are a major clinical issue, there is a significant gap between research and practice of interventions with minimal adverse side effects, which this clinical dissertation is designed to address. This paper discusses the clinical uses and current research on mindfulness-based interventions as an up and coming treatment approach to sleep disorders. Mindfulness-based interventions strive to improve attention, emotional reactivity, and self-reported sleepiness and worry without adverse side effects. It also includes a summary of findings from Erin Rosello, Psy.D., a child psychologist who uses cognitive-behavioral approaches with children in her practice. The clinical information from the literature review and peer-review were integrated into the creation of a manuscript. This manuscript was later submitted to a journal in order for it to be accessible to sleep practitioners in order to enhance their knowledge, skills, and awareness of mindfulness meditation for the use of sleep problems. Materials created and used for the manuscript are included in the appendix, as is a summary of feedback from Dr. Rosello. Additional suggestions are offered for reducing the gap between research and practice pertaining to sleep disorders as well as the discussion of the study's limitations and its implications.
