Treatment outcomes for individuals suffering from either anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa are moderate, marked by high recidivism and dropout rates. Current psychotherapy models for the treatment of eating disorders focus primarily on the maladaptive eating behaviors and body-image distortions in clients. However, including a focus on the unique interpersonal functioning and attachment patterns of eating-disordered clients may provide a greater understanding into the persistence of eating disorder symptoms despite treatment. Within the attachment literature, researchers have consistently demonstrated a connection between attachment insecurity and eating disorders, specifically anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. The insecure attachment patterns of eating-disordered women have also been associated with increased dropout rates and poorer treatment outcomes. Therefore, this dissertation offers a therapeutic framework, informed by current attachment theory literature, that identifies the specific attachment patterns of the eating disorder diagnostic subgroups and theorizes about the reasons for the correlation between attachment insecurity and eating disorders. Then, an attachment-focused approach is proposed that can be incorporated into current psychotherapy models to enhance treatment. This approach will inform clinicians how to use a client's relational patterns to identify potential treatment concerns and create attachment-focused interventions that strengthen the therapeutic relationship and improve treatment outcome.
