College students have been shown to be highly stressed and experience depression and anxiety. Over the last two to three decades, mindfulness has emerged as a widely accepted and used therapy for a range of disorders including depression and anxiety. More recently, second order research has targeted the causes or mechanisms of action underlying mindfulness based interventions. The Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ) has emerged as an effective means for studying mindfulness and identifying core facets that make-up a mindful disposition.

This study sought to build on second order mindfulness research in better understanding how mindfulness can be utilized in treating depression and anxiety amongst college students. An online survey was administered at a midsize university, which assessed college students' mindfulness traits with the FFMQ along with a series of symptom measures. Mediation models were proposed to better understand mechanisms of action for the mindfulness habits of non-judgment to inner experience and non-reactivity to thoughts and feelings in terms of their impact on rumination and worry. Data from 207 participants were analyzed.

Study results demonstrated a connection between the mindfulness facets of non-judgment and non-reactivity with depression and anxiety, respectively. While non-judgment was correlated to depression and rumination, non-reactivity only correlated to worry and not anxiety. Regarding proposed mediation models, the proposed models for non-judgment and non-reactivity were supported by the data. The model for non-judgment identified decreasing self-criticism as a possible mechanism of action for non-judgment's relationship with rumination, and the model for non-reactivity identified reducing perseverative thinking as a possible mechanism of action for non-reactivity's relationship with worry. The mediation model for non-judgment remained significant when college stress was entered as a covariate. Results were also noteworthy for the mindfulness facets of acting with awareness and describing as related to symptom measures. Methodological and clinical implications in addition to areas for future research are examined.
