This clinical dissertation is a review of equine assisted therapy (EAT) through the perspective of attachment theory with emphasis on the working alliance between the therapeutic triad: the horse, therapist, and client. The goal of this clinical dissertation is to review a rapidly growing and yet relatively new field of alternative therapy through the lens of one of the oldest theoretical perspectives. This dissertation begins with a literature review of EATs including clarification of terminology, defining the horse as a co-therapist, contraindications of EAT, and challenges towards research. Next, a review of attachment theory and working alliance is provided through the context of EAT to examine possibilities of how a horse functions as a co-therapist. This dissertation posits that through an attachment perspective, it becomes possible to understand the benefits the horse as a co-therapist adds to the working alliance. To add depth and clarify the review of the literature, field consultation interviews were conducted and key elements from the interviews were summarized. A presentation of this dissertation was then created and disseminated to an audience of clinical professionals and a review of the effectiveness and quality of the presentation is provided. Finally personal reflections and reflection upon future projections of the field of EAT is given in the final section.
