This study examined a proposed dual attunement theory that acknowledges a relationship between intra- and inter-attunement and their influence on direct support professional work experience and individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire and Mindful Attention and Awareness Scales State Version were used to examine mindfulness; the Experiences in Close Relationships-Revised Scale was used to examine attachment; the Caregiver Care Recipient Mutuality Measure was used to examine the dyadic relationship; and the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey, Job in General Scale, and Perceived Stress Scale were used to measure work experience. Results from the tested structural equation model found attachment and mindfulness to be related constructs and indicated mindfulness and perception of the dyadic relationship influenced work experience. The findings support attachment patterns and mindfulness levels as aspects of intra-attunement; however, findings did not support the link between the intra-attunement and inter-attunement. Findings demonstrate the importance of intra- and inter-attunement on support professional experience to better support their work, improve retention efforts, and promote health for individuals with IDD.
