Cancer has significant physical, emotional, occupational/educational, and social consequences for the diagnosed and for the caregiver(s). Few studies focus specifically on the experience of the caregiver, accounting for differences between types of caregivers, or the stage of cancer experienced by their loved one. The researcher explored these issues via correlational analyses. The researcher hypothesized that secure attachment styles among caregivers would be associated with better coping outcomes; and insecure attachment styles among caregivers would be associated with poorer coping outcomes. The results indicated that greater avoidant attachment was related to less adaptive coping and greater anxious attachment was related to less maladaptive coping. The researcher also hypothesized that caregiver attachment styles and coping outcomes would be similar regardless of the stage of cancer, and regardless of the caregiver's relationship to the care-recipient. The results supported these hypotheses, indicating that there were no relationships between attachment, coping, and cancer stage or caregiver-care-recipient relationships.
