Ethnic identity development is common among Hispanic populations and usually emerges during adolescence, with significant effects on one's sense of self and mental health. There is limited research on the effectiveness of increased parent awareness of ethnic identity development. To fill this gap in the literature, this dissertation focuses on a community-based workshop created to provide parents with information on ethnic identity development, including an introduction to ethnic identity, positive and negative outcomes, development models, ways to talk to adolescent children, and how to access local resources for counseling. Sixteen program evaluators from the local community and 8 experts reviewed the presentation and provided feedback on the strengths and areas of needed growth of the workshop and accompanying workbook. Recommendations for future workshops include the need for optimal advertising for similar community events.
