The art of the self-portrait has evolved from aristocratic paintings to the Kodak Brownie Box camera to the use of smartphones that come standardly-equipped with cameras. Considering the increased popularity of selfie culture, the researcher investigated the impact of selfie culture on millennial women specifically. This qualitative study applied a phenomenological approach with a hybrid model of interview questions and an analysis of participant social media profiles. The study determined the lived experience of millennial women participating in selfie culture is described in five over-arching themes, which are: collaboration, communication, interpersonal relationships, self-expression, and validation-seeking. The researcher presents the case that the study of selfie culture has evolved into a new phase categorized as the second phase of selfie culture study exploring constructs beyond narcissism and attention-seeking behaviors.
