Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) was developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn and has been a widely used intervention. MBSR consists of purposeful attention of the present moment that is approached from a non-judgmental and accepting perspective. It can be used in both clinical and non-clinical settings. MBSR is an eight-week program that is effective in improving a variety of outcomes, including reducing stress and increasing mindful awareness. This pilot study looked at the effects of a modified MBSR program on participants' perceived stress and awareness levels within a non-clinical population. It was proposed that participating in a modified five-week MBSR program would have similar effects as participating in the full eight-week program. A five-week MBSR program was created for the purposes of this study, and participants were recruited to complete the program. There were three different observations in this pilot study: a Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS) pre-test completion and submission (N =8), a PSS and MAAS post-test completion and submission (N =3), and a PSS and MAAS one-month follow-up completion and submission (N = 4). A quantitative within subjects design was used to assess the data collected from participants who had observations at both the pre-test and post-test period. A significant decrease in stress from pre-test to one-month follow-up was detected. There was also a significant increase in awareness from pre-test to one-month follow-up. Demographic differences in the pre, post, and follow-up groups were non-significant, indicating that differential dropout cannot explain the outcomes. Implications for modified Mindfulness-Based programs in community settings are discussed.
