This study explored the psychological effects on adult children of mothers with schizophrenia to determine whether their developed mother-child attachment has a significant effect on their (adult) romantic relationships. This study includes a review of the literature on schizophrenia, attachment styles, mother-child interaction, and the effect on adult romantic relationships. To further investigate this topic, interpretative phenomenological analysis theory was reviewed and presented to provide clinical formulation of the participants' reported experiences as children and now during adulthood. The participants took part in semistructured 45-60 minute interviews that covered their upbringing and their reflection on their relationship with their mother. Some of the questions also covered whether the participants have children, will have children, or if they are even interested in offspring. The participants also discussed their past and/or current relationships and described their attachment or expectations within these relationships and/or partners.
