The purpose of this Master's Degree Project is to study the implementation of Environmental Management Systems (EMS) within organizations, with a focus on the EMS driving forces and barriers typically encountered during the implementation process. This project will also provide recommendations to assist organizations with EMS implementation as it relates to driving forces and barriers. The research for this project was conducted through a literature review, key-informant interviews and questionnaires with managers from different industries, with considerable knowledge and/or experience with EMS implementation.

Research confirmed previous findings and identified new assertions regarding EMS implementation, driving forces and barriers. Conclusions relate to the following: Primary Conclusions: (1) Five stages to EMS implementation are recognized. (2) The lists of driving forces and barriers are valid but should include additional driving forces and barriers. (3) Categorization of driving forces and barriers enhances environmental manager's understanding, usage and management of them. (4) Organizations should identify and analyze driving forces and barriers in order to enhance EMS implementation success and optimize the benefits.

Secondary Conclusions: (1) When implementing an EMS, organizations should have a strategy(s). (2) There is an important human element to EMS implementation. (3) Driving forces and barriers are dynamic. (4) Driving forces and barriers are significant and impact EMS implementation; steps can be taken to ensure the full potential of driving forces is realized. (5) The implementation stage affects the level of influence of driving forces and barriers. (6) The industry type affects the type of barriers.

Based on the research and conclusions, three recommendations and three suggestions were produced. The recommendations are directed towards organizations. They provide direction and guidance to organizations on identifying and analysing driving forces and barriers, and in turn using driving forces to overcome barriers, all to assist with the EMS implementation process. The suggestions are directed toward different groups within society (consultants, government, universities and other educational institutions). These suggestions work indirectly to improve EMS implementation for organizations, facilitating the process for them from outside the organization.
