This is a phenomenological study exploring the experience of learning in a Zen community, as given by Zen students who were residents for five years or more. A second objective was to determine if such learning could be applied in the organizational setting. The literature review explores organizational learning, in brief, and Zen Buddhism, as context for the research. The review introduces the research purpose and the researcher, including a brief introduction to the methods of the research. Findings highlight four classes of learning that represent what is learned and how learning occurs in the Zen center. All learning is driven by the intention to reduce the suffering of others, to meet each moment of life with compassion and wisdom, and to explore the self so that one can forget the self. The classes are practice, teaching, structure, and community. Attributes of each class are included in table form and discussed. Applications in organizational learning are considered in the discussion section, as are applications in executive coaching. The psychological relevance of this study is also discussed.
