This qualitative study explores the impact of using the APIE process in community recreation agencies that provide inclusive recreation. The APIE process is an accountability model to guide the design of programs and services that realize individual participant objectives (Peterson & Stumbo, 2000) and is a recommended process to use in community recreation and involves several steps: assessment, program planning, implementation and evaluation. For this study, to understand the impact of using the APIE process in the service delivery of inclusive recreation, I utilized a qualitative, grounded theory research design with a constructivist lens and sought out the perspectives of an SRA inclusion manager, three park district recreation supervisors, and eight parents of children with disabilities who used inclusion services. This study is important to the field of therapeutic recreation, specifically inclusive recreation to increase practitioners' understanding of how using the APIE Process influences service delivery. Data from this study provide a deeper understanding of why APIE is considered a "best practice," and identify areas that pose as a challenge for agencies. This dissertation concludes with recommendations of areas needed for further research and curriculum for inclusive recreation to better prepare parks and recreation professionals.
